Extractions Q & A

What is a dental extraction?

Dental extractions are the removal of a tooth from its position in your jawbone. While the primary focus in dentistry is to save your natural teeth, there are times when an extraction is the best option.

When that need arises, finding a dentist who is skilled in extractions and has extensive experience is important. The team at El Paso Periodontics & Implant Specialists offers a combination of excellent extraction skills and the very latest in dental technology.

What kinds of dental extractions are available?

The most basic type of extraction is called a simple extraction and is used when a tooth that has fully emerged through your gum tissue and needs to be pulled. There are several reasons this might be necessary, including:

  • Advanced decay
  • Excessive crowding
  • To make room for orthodontic care
  • In preparation for certain types of chemotherapy

Your practitioner begins by administering a local anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable from start to finish. The next step involves using an instrument called an elevator to loosen the tooth from the bone. Forceps allow your dentist to grasp the tooth and rock it back and forth until it lifts out of your gum tissue.

If your tooth is not fully erupted or is broken near your gum line, a surgical extraction may be necessary. With this approach, your dentist makes one or more incisions to open your gum tissue and gain access to the tooth or tooth fragments. You may need a different form of anesthesia for a surgical extraction.

Wisdom tooth extraction is classified as an oral surgery. If your tooth is impacted, or fully encapsulated by gum tissue, an incision must be made to access the tooth.

In some cases the tooth must be broken into smaller fragments for removal. El Paso Periodontics & Implant Specialists perform extractions in their state-of-the-art in-office oral surgery facility.

How should I prepare for a tooth extraction?

As with any dental procedure, it’s important to share the full details of your health history with your dentist prior to your appointment. If you’ve recently been treated for a condition or are planning treatment in the near future, be sure to include that information.

You should also let your dentist know if you have any of the following:

  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Congenital heart defect
  • Adrenal disease
  • Liver disease
  • Thyroid disease

Any condition that impairs your immune function should also be noted. You may need to take antibiotics or adjust your medications prior to your procedure.

The most important thing you can do to prepare for a tooth extraction is to listen to the follow-up care instructions and prepare to follow those guidelines exactly.
